4-DAY YOSEMITE ITINERARY

GUIDE TYPE
Itinerary
RECOMMENDED DAYS
4 days
BEST SEASON
Late spring through fall, access dependent
LAST VERIFIED
Yosemite gets easier when you stop treating every landmark as a separate driving stop. Park once in the Valley, choose one major physical objective, and let each day stay inside one planning zone.
This four-day plan protects a major hike, a perspective-changing Glacier Point day and a seasonal flex day without pretending traffic, weather and road access are fixed.
Give Yosemite Valley two days, but only one major hike.
Arrive before the busiest traffic window and avoid moving the car unnecessarily.
Treat Glacier Point as a distinct day shape.
Use Tioga/high country only when the road and weather support it.
Keep a Valley or Mariposa Grove backup for seasonal-access changes.
TRIP AT A GLANCE
See the Trip Shape Before You Choose the Stops
Day 1 — Arrive early and learn the Valley
Enter early, park once and use the Valley shuttle or walking paths. Start with Lower Yosemite Fall and meadow views, then decide whether Tunnel View belongs at arrival or late day.
The goal is orientation, not collection
Use the first day to understand where the shuttle, trailheads and parking actually are. Do not spend it repeatedly moving the car between nearby sights.
Day 2 — Choose one major waterfall objective
Build the day around Vernal Fall, Nevada Fall or a shorter Valley plan. Current Mist Trail and John Muir Trail routing must decide the exact loop.
Vernal Fall or Nevada Fall?
Vernal Fall creates a complete, high-payoff hike for many visitors. Continue toward Nevada Fall only when conditions, daylight and the group’s energy still support the longer commitment.
THE BIG DAY
Choose the Experience Before the Mileage

WATERFALL CORRIDOR
Vernal + Nevada
Start toward Vernal; continue only when time, footing and energy still agree.

SOUTH-RIM PERSPECTIVE
Glacier Point
Choose the big-picture day when visibility and seasonal road access cooperate.

VALLEY FLEX
Scenic recovery
Short walks and reflections are the right plan when heat, access or recovery says no.
Day 3 — Change perspective at Glacier Point
Glacier Point turns the Valley’s landmarks into a coherent landscape. Use the day for overlooks and south-rim perspective rather than trying to squeeze in another full Valley itinerary.
Four Mile Trail or a scenic day?
A major ascent deserves to be the day’s anchor. If heat, trail status or fatigue makes that a poor choice, use the road-accessed overlooks and preserve sunset flexibility.
Sunrise and sunset positioning
Pick one lighting objective. A calm early Valley and a late Glacier Point perspective are stronger than racing between every famous viewpoint.
CHANGE THE PERSPECTIVE

VALLEY
Granite at Eye Level
Use waterfalls, meadows and park-once movement to experience the Valley up close.

GLACIER POINT
Step Back from the Valley
Change the scale of the trip with a south-rim perspective when the seasonal road is open.

SEASONAL FLEX
High Country Only When It Works
Let Tioga access, weather and recovery decide whether the final day goes higher or stays flexible.
Day 4 — High country when access agrees
Tioga Road and Yosemite high country can transform the trip, but they remain seasonal. Verify the road, weather and trail conditions before committing.
If Tioga is unavailable
Use a second Valley objective, Mariposa Grove when its shuttle and access are operating, or a genuine recovery block. The flex is part of the itinerary, not a failure.
Parking, shuttles and lodging
Stay close enough that the morning plan is realistic. Overnight reservations are separate from entrance access, and sleeping in a vehicle is only allowed in a registered campsite.
What to verify
Current roads, trails, shuttles, fire and smoke.
Half Dome permit and cable status if relevant.
Mist Trail / JMT detours before the major hike.
Tioga and Glacier Point Road status before leaving lodging.
Yosemite rewards committing to a day shape.
Protect one major objective, park once whenever possible and let roads, heat, smoke, trail work and group energy remove the extras before they damage the day.
